Emergency Dental Services

It is very important for you to know what kind of oral injuries would require an emergency visit to your dentist. Accidents are unpredictable and can happen at any point in our life. Some oral injuries may be severe and might require immediate medical attention, buinjury then it can wait until your dentist’s normal business hours start.
In general, any oral problem that requires urgent treatment to stop bleeding, ease severe oral pain, or saving a tooth, is considered an emergency. If you are currently having any of these problems then contact your dentist immediately.

Some common dental emergencies are:

  • Knocked-out tooth: If you feel that your tooth is knocked out, see if you can put it back in the socket, be very careful not to swallow it down. But if you are finding it hard to get your tooth to stay in the socket by the time you reach your dentist. Then clean that knocked out tooth and keep it in a container of milk until you reach the dental clinic. To help with the bleeding, you can apply a cold, wet compress.

  • Cracked/Chipped tooth: If your tooth is fractured then wash your mouth with clean water and apply cold press to the outside of your face to reduce swelling. A cracked tooth may expose the nerve endings resulting in pain or sensitivity. Take an Acetaminophen for pain relief.

  • Abscessed tooth: This is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition in which a pocket of pus has formed in your teeth and this has led to an infection. Having an abscessed tooth may cause swelling in your face, fever, sensitivity to consuming anything hot and cold, severe toothache, and pimple-like bump on your gums near the infected tooth. This is an emergency situation as the infection can spread to the surrounding tissues and affect other parts of the body as well.

  • Persistent canker sore: Canker sores are very common and can happen to any given person. But it is a cause for concern if it persists or becomes infected. If the canker sore has not healed within two weeks, then contact your dentist for immediate medical attention.

  • Numbness in your tooth: You were experiencing painful toothaches but suddenly it is gone, or should I say, your tooth has lost all its sensations. This is a major cause for alarm. It can be a sign that an infection has spread to the root of your tooth. Always pay attention to your toothaches, as they act as indicators of any serious dental problem.
