Sometimes it becomes inevitable to get a tooth extraction done. Be it due to tooth decay or any other dental problem, but a lot of people think that tooth extraction is very painful. When done in the right way and by expert dentists, tooth extraction is a rather simple procedure and almost painless. It is true that a slight amount of swelling and bleeding post the procedure is normal, but it goes away in a couple of days.
People getting braces may need to get tooth extraction done to make room for the teeth being moved. There are various reasons in which tooth extraction may be required. The most common of them include –
- Tooth decay or damaged tooth
- Loose teeth
- When a tooth is unable to erupt from the gum
- Crowded teeth
- Baby teeth not falling and new permanent teeth already erupting
- Pain and swelling due to wisdom tooth
Preparation
Your dentist will take an X-ray to help plan the procedure in a better way. If you’re getting wisdom tooth removed, it may require a panoramic X-ray. Some dentists prescribe antibiotics before the surgery to suppress the infection.
For a simple extraction, the dentist will give local anesthesia to numb the affected area. You’ll feel slight pressure, but no pain during the procedure. And for surgical extraction, you’ll receive both intravenous and local anesthesia. In this procedure, it may be required that the bone around your tooth is cut, so that the tooth can be easily extracted.
What are the risks of tooth extraction?
Make sure you talk to your dentist in detail about the procedure. Trust his treatment and if he/she recommends tooth extraction then that will be the best option for you. But it is good to know the risks involved. Usually after the extraction a blood clot forms in the socket – the hole in the bone. But if it doesn’t the dentist will have to protect the area using a sedative dressing. Some other risks include –
- Severe fever and chills
- Excessive bleeding
- Nausea or vomiting
- Redness and swelling around the area of surgery
- Cough
Wisdom tooth extractions
Wisdom tooth extraction is also a part of surgical tooth extractions. There are cases in which wisdom tooth can be severely painful and needs immediate extraction. But in other cases, it remains unaffected for years. At Dental Panache we have an expert team who handles wisdom tooth extractions with utmost care.
The cost of tooth extraction varies from clinic to clinic. It also depends upon the condition of your tooth. Talk to your dentist about the cost before getting the procedure done.
Recovery period of tooth extractions
The recovery takes a few days. If you experience excessive pain, fever, bleeding doesn’t stop, or the swelling doesn’t reduce, you must consider the dentist at the earliest.
Doing these steps will ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.
- Use ice-packs on your cheek directly to reduce swelling. You can use it in an interval of 10 minutes.
- If the dentist prescribes any medication, do take it.
- Rest and relax for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
- The day after the procedure and for a couple of days, try and eat soft foods like khichdi, pudding, yogurt etc.
- Brush and floss normally, but try and avoid the extraction site.
- Try and avoid using a straw for the first 24 hours after the tooth extraction procedure.
- Use saltwater and warm water to rinse thoroughly.
