Root canal treatment (RCT), also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental treatment performed on a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. It helps in repairing and safeguarding the area form further deterioration.

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is typically a 4-step process. –
Initially, the endodontist starts the treatment by numbing the infected tooth. For this, they inject a needle filled with local anesthesia. After the tooth is numb, they place a small sheet of rubber and isolate the tooth and keep it clean and dry.
In the next step, the endodontist will create an opening at the top portion of the infected tooth using small equipment such as a drill. Meanwhile, when he/she has gained enough access, they will start removing the diseased pulp from inside of the tooth using endodontic files. With the help of water, they will remove any residue of the pulp left and will apply an antimicrobial solution. The solution kills any remaining bacteria and reduces the potential risk of infection.
Once the infected area is completely cleaned and dry, using a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, your dentist will fill the space. Unless the permanent crown is ready, you will have to use temporary filling.
After a few weeks, your dentist will set up the permanent crown on the top of the tooth.
If the crown is unstable after restoration, they may install a small supporting post inside the root chamber.

The only pain that a patient feel is from the injection and not the treatment. The local anesthesia is used to numb the particular infected area; thus, the chances of pain are reduced to a negligible level.
